Franklin bridge over 401 to reopen within a month

By Casey MacDonald

Good news for Cambridge motorists, the Ministry of Transportation says the Franklin Boulevard bridge over the 401 is expected to reopen to traffic by this time next month.

The bridge has been closed since early May in between Pinebush Road and Jamieson Parkway in order to demolish and rebuild the bridge over the 401.

In an email to 570 NEWS, Kersondra Hickey with The Ministry of Transportation says traffic will be flowing along the new bridge very soon.

“In September, the contractor installed the girders for the new bridge. Following this, the bridge deck was formed and placed on October 19, 2018. The new bridge is expected to be open to traffic no later than the end of November 2018, and the broader project is expected to be complete in December 2018.”

The replacement of the bridge is part of the Highway 401 interchange improvements from Hespeler Road to Townline which began back in spring 2015.

Phase two of the project will begin in 2019 and wrap up in 2021.

When phase two is completed, the 401 through Cambridge will be widened to ten lanes, including the installation of HOV lanes, the reconstruction of the 401 interchange at Franklin and Hespeler, the replacement of the Hespeler Road bridge, and the expansion of the commuter parking lot at Townline Road.

More information on the project can be found here.
