Food drive taking fresh approach

It's a food drive with a twist.
Instead of canned goods, The Food Bank of Waterloo will be collecting fresh fruit and vegetables for a few hours on Saturday.
The Harvest Food Drive will happen at Sobeys Ira Needles and Sobeys Bridgeport from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.
“We've always distributed fresh food, we've been doing it for years, but not a lot of people know that we distribute fresh food,” said Wendi Campbell, CEO of the Food Bank of Waterloo Region.
The food bank says in 2017, 35 per cent of all food they distributed was fresh.
“It's going to be an opportunity to talk to the community about fresh food … why it's important to the programs that we're serving … and give the community a chance to donate some of those fresh items, which are going to add to those non-perishable items that we are also collecting now through our fall food drive.” Campbell told Kitchener Today with Brian Bourke on 570 NEWS.
“I think the food is a really important piece of that road to recovery, for so many individuals and families in our community … the healthier the food is that we provide, the healthier those individuals are going to be in our community.” she added.
The food bank will have refrigerated trucks at both Sobeys locations on Saturday.
All produce that is donated will be distributed next week.
