Kitchener City Council defers bulk of sidewalk snow clearing pilot project

It's the end of June, but snow clearing was the hot topic at last night's Kitchener City Council meeting.
Kitchener city staff recommended a five part pilot project to try to improve sidewalk snow clearing in the city.
In the end, council voted to defer three of the options and approved two of the lighter options.
Approved by council is a plan to have proactive bylaw enforcement from November to April and partnership grants to provide snow clearing for residents requiring assistance.
The total cost of the approved one year pilot projects is less than $70,000.
If all five pilots were approved for a one year test, the cost would have been just under $400,000 or $760,000 if a new sidewalk plow were included.
The three options being deferred include contracting out 24 hour clearing on a 40 km test track of sidewalks, having city staff clear snow within 24 hours in a test area and setting up two sensor stations to gauge the amount of snowfall across the city.
