By CityNews Kitchener Staff

The University of Waterloo has appointed Dominic Barton as the school's 11th chancellor.

Barton will step down as global managing partner of McKinsey & Company on July 1.

In that role, he provides strategic advice to national leaders, government and corporations.

Barton also chairs the Government of Canada's Advisory Council on Economic Growth.

“Dominic Barton is renowned for his strategic insights and expert guidance on business, governance and economic development,” said University of Waterloo president and vice-chancellor Feridun Hamdullahpur.

“We are inspired by Dominic's commitment to creating positive global change and to equity and inclusivity which in many ways complement our University's record of innovation and aspirations to make a global impact.”

The chancellor serves for three terms.

Barton succeeds Tom Jenkins.

Jenkins, chair of OpenText, served as the University of Waterloo's chancellor for the last three years.
