Cayuga man seriously burned after ‘materials accident’, explosion inside home

A 60-year-old man was airlifted to hospital with serious burn injuries after an explosion in the lower level of his home in Cayuga.

Haldimand County OPP say it happened around 10:15 a.m. Saturday on Highway 3 near River Road.

It’s alleged the man was working on some materials inside the residence, when they suddenly exploded, and left him with severe burns.

An Ornge Air Ambulance was called in, and paramedics also treated a 68-year-old woman on scene.

Police say she was on the main level of the home at the time of the explosion, and received minor injuries.

The home was severely damaged, but no dollar estimate is currently available.

The Ontario Fire Marshal and OPP’s Explosive Disposal Unit attended the scene as a precaution. The investigation continues, but the cause of the explosion is not suspicious. There is no risk to public safety in the area.
