Rangers erase early deficit

By Chris Pope

It wasn’t a pretty period.

The Erie Otters jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, which seemed to wake up the Kitchener Rangers. Or maybe it was the intermission.

“I’m sure the leadership group had some key words to say between periods, as did I,” said Rangers head coach Jay McKee. “I liked the start of the second and how we carried it through there.”

That leadership group led the Rangers reaction, with three third-period goals. Adam Mascherin, Logan Stanley and Connor Bunnaman each tickled the twine.

Mascherin continues his scorching scoring streak. Give him 22 points, including 13 goals, in his last 10 games.

After a missed opportunity on the power play in the third period, Erie evened the evening thanks to Kyle Maksimovich’s 20th of the season.

The Rangers would get the winner off the stick of Riley Damiani with under four minutes left in final frame.

“I didn’t really look. I just shut my eyes and threw it at the net,” laughed the 17-year-old Damiani after his spinning shot from the top of the circle. “With a guy like Bunnaman in front of the net, you just have to throw it there.”
