Regional Police ask for budget increase of 3.3 per cent

Regional Police are holding the line on services in their proposed operating budget for 2018.
The Waterloo Regional Police Services Board voted to accept in principle a 3.32 per cent increase over last year, at their monthly meeting on Wednesday.
Chair of the Board Tom Galloway says the force found just over half a million dollars in savings to achieve that, adding the public won’t be impacted by reduction options.
“I don’t think the community will see any impacts in terms of those reductions,” says Galloway, which include things like fuel costs, debenture costs and salary gaping. “These are things that won’t be noticeable to the average person.”
It also includes an approved expansion request for five new positions at the Communications Centre.
The police budget represents a 0.60 per cent hike in the property tax levy — or an average of about $600 per household.
Galloway says that’s even better than last year.
“It certainly is coming in at a very favourable level compared to years’ past,” he says. “I can’t imagine that there’ll be too much discussion at Regional Council.”
The police budget will be presented to Regional councillors next month.
