With 11 collisions this week already between vehicles and deer, Wellington County OPP remind all drivers to never ‘veer for deer.’
If you suddenly spot a deer right in front of your car, the OPP’s advice is to stay in your lane: a lot of drivers get into crashes making sudden turns to the right or left, colliding with an oncoming vehicle, or going into a ditch.
OPP say apply the brakes, and blare your horn in one long continuous blast to scare the deer away.
Deer are more active at this time of year, especially around sunrise, and between sunset and midnight.
And police say deer usually don’t travel alone: if one sprints across the road in front of you, there’s likely another nearby.
Police also say don’t rely on deer whistles, deer fences, reflectors, or other devices.
Drivers have to report a collision with a deer to police if anyone in the vehicle gets hurt, or damage is more than $2,000.
