Union calling for Ontario college strike vote next month

The union representing faculty at Ontario colleges — including Conestoga College — is getting ready to hold a strike vote, soon after the school year begins.

The Ontario Public Service Employees Union, on behalf of faculty at Ontario public colleges, has asked the Ontario Labour Relations Board to schedule a strike vote for the second week of September which coincides with the start of the fall term.

Dr. John Tibbits is President of Conestoga College and tells 570 NEWS most members haven’t even seen this offer yet. However, he says it’s a pretty good offer — a four year deal at 7.5 percent.

The collective agreement with college faculty is set to expire on September 30.

OPSEU president Warren ‘Smokey’ Thomas said he’s disappointed so far with management’s refusal to engage in some of the ideas put forward to improve Ontario’s college system.

Tibbits says it’s business as usual at Conestoga College — which employs close to 500 full-time staff — and has this message for students: “We’re going to be open in September.”
