Petition pitched to keep two ball diamonds at Waterloo Park

The City of Waterloo’s Outdoor Sports Field Strategy is not going over well in some quarters.
It’s considering closing two baseball diamonds in Waterloo Park to make way for what’s being called a future “festival heart space.”
The recommendation is to replace them with diamonds already in place in the Eastbridge and Laurelwood neighbourhoods.
Some residents in those areas have raised concerns about increased noise and parking issues.
Some also maintain the ball parks at Waterloo Park are of a much higher quality than the ones at Eastbridge and Laurelwood.
However, city councillors who support the change, maintain this will actually increase the number of baseball fields in the city and not decrease it.
Either way, a volunteer with Waterloo Minor Baseball has launched a petition aimed at getting the city to reconsider.

“The two westside diamonds being discussed are used primarily by adult leagues. There are two Seagram Drive diamonds are used by youth, and are not being discussed at all. The proposal is not to move these adult-use diamonds to Eastbridge/Laurelwood, as that is inappropriate. The proposal is to make better use of up to three RIM Park diamonds, that are currently unlit, thus increasing play time for adults. For any youth programming impacted there, the consideration is to move that programming to existing diamonds in Eastbridge/Laurelwood, that would undergo rejuvenation.” said Waterloo Mayor Dave Jaworsky, in an email to 570 NEWS.
