Kitchener city council heard from residents about a planned development in the Doon area on Monday.
At issue is a plan by Owl Properties Inc. to put up townhouses on its land at Pinnacle Drive and Doon Valley Drive.
It is looking for a zone change that would see some 175 townhouses built. City staff have recommended council approve the plan.
At the Planning and Strategic Initiatives Committee meeting Monday, the committee voted 9-2 to reject the staff’s recommendations.
Ward Four Councillor Yvonne Fernandes tells 570 NEWS, the location for this one is a concern for residents.
Fernandes says there are already a lot of students living in that area. “Unfortunately the location for this one is right smack dab in the middle of residents. I can see where 150 students, in a tight location like that, is a concern for the residents that are living there.”
Noise and garbage are the main issues.
Fernandes adds 2,000 international students are looking for housing closer to the school.
She says students need safe and affordable housing, not situations like having eight students crammed into one residence, which she says greatly concerns the fire department.
Council will officially vote on the plan at council on April 24th. If council rejects the proposal, the build can go to the Ontario Municipal Board for a final ruling.
