Wellington Water Watchers react to government well proposal

Wellington Water Watchers is weighing in on the government’s new proposal in regards to their well.
Nestle purchased the well in Middlebrook in Wellington Centre last summer, but will now have to wait two years to test it.
Mike Nagy is the board chair with the Wellington Water Watchers and he says this news is very encouraging, but there is still a lot further to go.
“It’s very welcoming. Obviously we want to keep up the pressure…the government has listened, the government is taking action but we want to make sure that action leads to meaningful regulation and change, but it’s a very encouraging day for us.”
He adds that he hopes this meaningful change comes sooner rather than later, before it’s too late.
“There’s this illusion in Ontario that we have an unlimited supply of water,” says Nagy. “We said we would never run out of cod, we said we would never run out of trees and we know those were falsehoods. People say we’ll never run out of water, we’ve been in water shortages for decades in southern and central Ontario.”
In response to these government proposals, Nestle released a statement today saying they are happy with the proposals and are looking forward to rising to the challenge.
“We are fully supportive and share the Ontario Government’s commitment to protecting water resources,” says Nestle Waters Canada President Debbie Moore.
Many on both sides are agreeing that this is a positive step forward for water conservation in the province and the country.
“We had smoking rules that have been updated, there were voting rules that have been updated,” says Nagy. “Everything needs to be updated once the realities of those laws become evident. We’re seeing the environmental harm of what’s happening and the great profit being made off of people’s water. We’re happy the government is taking action.”
