CALGARY (NEWS 1130) – Calgary Police say the man they have in custody is believed to the same person witnesses spotted with five-year-old Taliyah Leigh Marsman on Monday.
An Amber Alert is still in effect for Taliyah, who matches the description of a girl who was spotted with a man Monday morning.
“The victim’s vehicle was abandoned. We believe a black male and a young girl matching Taliyah’s description went from that car into the grey sedan,” says Inspector Don Coleman.
Police say they believe the man they took into custody last night, was the one seen with the five-year-old. The suspect knows the family and has not been cooperative.
“It’s incredibly frustrating, but…complete focus is on moving this ahead.”
Coleman says he was in the area northeast of Calgary where police search teams are scouring the grass looking for signs of the girl.
“This individual was briefly in that area. We’ve searched other premises in the last few days, this rural area is no different other than the fact it’s a rural area and draws some attention. For investigators it’s no different than the houses we’ve searched.”
Coleman says the man is known to police and has an “extensive criminal history”.
Police are asking the public to continue sending in any information that may lead them to Taliyah.
