This is a long extended weekend for Newfoundlanders in Waterloo Region.
The Cambridge Newfoundland Club is holding its 45th annual reunion.
The event runs through the entire long weekend (July 1st to
3rd) at the Cambridge Newfoundland Club location on Dunbar Road by Cambridge Centre mall.
Jamie Squires is President and he tells 570 News they’re expecting up to ten thousand over the long weekend.
Cambridge has boasted about having the biggest population of Newfoundlanders outside of the province of Newfoundland.
Squires says over the years, many Newfoundlanders came to the Toronto area to find work, and then stayed. He says many moved down the highway to Galt, Preston, and Hespeler.
Back in the 70’s, it was said, one in about four residents were straight from “The Rock”.
He says you don’t have to be a Newfie to attend events throughout the weekend at the club at 1500 Dunbar Road.
Squires says Newfoundlanders are easy to spot around town – he says they are hospitable, nice, generous and helpful.
He also says if you’re on the right street or in the right bar in Cambridge, you can point one out!
Newfoundland and Labrador MP David Brazil will be the special guest speaker.
