A new Grand River Transit bus route will soon bring Wilmot Township a bit closer to Waterloo.
Route 77 will launch on Monday, April 17, on a one year pilot project to see if ridership can support full-time service.
Service will run every 75 minutes from 7:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Buses will launch from the Boardwalk Medical Centre on Ira Needles in Waterloo and finish by the No Frills in New Hamburg making several other stops in New Hamburg, Baden and Petersburg along the way.
Jeff Gerber is the councillor representing New Hamburg in Wilmot Township, he says there has been a high demand for the service from residents and could help a lot of people,
“Certainly it’s a great opportunity to help students and seniors, people without vehicles, people without enough vehicles in some households, to be able to get into the city and connect with things that might be available in Wilmot.”
Grand River Transit will monitor the ridership through the year and determine next spring if the service will continue.
Councillor Gerber says that’s the million dollar question: will those who asked for the service actually use it?
“Is it a need that is widely spread enough that it can sustain itself? or is it just sort of a niche and maybe there are other ways that we have to meet the needs.” Gerber added, “Hopefully for the community it is sustainable.”
