15 players from Waterloo Region and area drafted in OHL Saturday

15 players from Waterloo Region, Guelph and Elora are a step closer to the Ontario Hockey League. The OHL held its 2016 draft on Saturday.

A record nine Waterloo Wolves were drafted (eight were selected in 2007).

Here is the complete list of local draft picks:

-Centre Alex Gritz (Pennsylvania) of the Waterloo Wolves was a third round pick (50th overall) of the Soo Greyhounds

-Centre Mitchell Hoelscher (Elora) of the Waterloo Wolves was a third round pick (56th overall) of the Ottawa 67’s

-Goalie Nathan Torchia (Baden) of the Waterloo Wolves selected in fourth round (66th overall) by the Oshawa Generals

-Left Winger Chris Playfair (Waterloo) of the Waterloo Wolves selected in fourth round (75th overall) by the Windsor Spitfires

-Centre Luke Bignell (Kitchener) of the Kitchener Jr. Rangers selected in fifth round (85th overall) by the Barrie Colts

-Centre Mitch Morrison (Guelph) of Guelph Gryphons Minor Midget taken in fifth round (86th overall) by the Saginaw Spirit

-Centre Keanan Stewart (Conestogo) of Guelph Gryphons Minor Midget selected in fifth round (101st overall) by the Owen Sound Attack

The son’s of former Kitchener Rangers coaches Pete DeBoer and Steve Spott were also drafted on Saturday. Jack DeBoer went to the Oshawa Generals, Tyler Spott was selected by Hamilton.
