A newly-opened business in downtown Kitchener had a bit of an Easter Sunday scare.
A stretch of sidewalk across from Kitchener City Hall is fenced off because of falling bricks.
It happened early Sunday afternoon, right as people were out for Easter brunch and enjoying the weather.
The bricks smashed through Rhapsody Barrel Bar and Gypsy Lee’s storefront sign — just two weeks after the restaurant and clothing shop opened its doors.
Mike Seiling is Chief Building Official with the City of Kitchener and says a contractor will examine the area today.
He says the best case scenario is to have the bricks removed, and the fencing down by Tuesday morning so the businesses can reopen.
Seiling adds moisture is likely to blame for the bricks falling in the first place.
He tells 570 News the brick feature projects out from the wall making it a “perfect shelf” for ice, water and snow to congregate over the long term.
“I know you’re all wondering about the rest of the bricks,” Rhapsody Barrel Bar posted on Instagram.
“In order to secure them we will be closed Monday until 5:00 for some restoration.”
