The Ontario Public Service Employees Union is urging the Wynne government to earmark $100 million in the spring budget to deal with what it warns is a “crisis in corrections.”
OPSEU vice president Gareth Jones says facilities are overcrowded and understaffed, and too many inmates with mental health illnesses and substance abuse issues are being warehoused without treatment.
Yesterday, Oshawa MPP Jennifer French, the NDP’s critic for correctional services, joined Gareth on a tour of the Brockville Jail and St. Lawrence Valley Correctional Treatment Centre to get a first hand look at the problems the system is facing.
