The Ministry of Transportation is out with a new law as we ring in a new year.
Effective January 1st, all drivers, including cyclists, will have to stop and yield the whole roadway until pedestrians have fully crossed the street.
The rules apply to crossovers identified with specific signs, road markings and lights as well as school crossings where there is a crossing guard displaying a school crossing stop sign.
However, the new rules do not apply to pedestrian crosswalks at intersections with stop signs or traffic signals, unless a school crossing guard is present.
Drivers and cyclist who do not follow the new law can be fined up to $500 and 3 demerit points with fines doubling in Community Safety Zones, near schools and public areas.
The law is part of the MTO’s Making Ontario’s Roads Safer Act.
