Kitchener going with Star Wars theme on New Year’s Eve

The force is strong in Kitchener today as final preparations are made for tonight’s Star Wars themed New Year’s Eve celebration.
Jeff Young is the Manager of Special Events for the City of Kitchener and told 570 News about the themed event.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun, we’re looking to capitalize on the significant buzz that is out in the community right now surrounding Star Wars. So although it’s loosely based on Star Wars– it’s more of an overall space theme, but we’ve got a lot of things going on starting at 6 pm all the way until midnight.”
Young added that they used a theme for last year’s celebration, and it was a success.
“We started using pop culture last year, we had an 80’s theme and brought out a Delorean and KITT. This year we’re doing something similar with the Star Wars theme– we’ll have the retro arcade, a mini toycon, Star Wars cosplay and a lot of other opportunities to have fun and remember your childhood.”
If weather is cooperative, Young said they typically see several thousand people come out to enjoy the free festivities.
“Everything is free, aside from the video games which are pay-to-play, but otherwise everyone can come out. The toycon, the entertainment and all of our other activities will be at no cost.”
