Ontario’s Lieut. Gov: Region’s ambition is heartwarming

Waterloo Region is getting praise from the province’s lieutenant governor.
Elizabeth Dowdeswell met with local leaders at Kitchener City Hall this morning as part of a tour criss-crossing Ontario.
She spoke about our region’s innovation, the refugee response, and environmental sustainability.
Dowdeswell says one of the things that excites her about this region is that people are not standing still:
“They understand that the world is changing fast around us, that there are new ways of creating things and developing processes for social good.”
She also took the opportunity to thank people for opening their doors to Syrian refugees.
Dowdeswell says being welcoming is part of who we are:
“I know that this community is thinking not just in the short term — the day folks arrive on the plane — but in the longer term: how they really become an integral part of the community that is Kitchener and Waterloo Region, more broadly.”
In the wake of international climate talks, the lieutenant governor also applauded our region for its environmental sustainability, saying that so many of the real actions taken to combat climate change happen at the local level:
“Governments at other levels put visions forward and set standards, perhaps, for what needs to be done — particularly when they enter international agreements — but often it’s at the local level where you can really make a significant difference.”
