IKEA is coming to Kitchener.
The home furnishing retailer will be opening a pick-up and order location at 130 Gateway Park Drive. The company plans on re-purposing the old Sears building.
The pick-up and order points are opening in London, St. Catherines, Whitby, Windsor and Kitchener.
The locations will be one-tenth the size of a regular IKEA store. The idea is to allow consumers to interact with the IKEA brand in smart, new and convenient ways.
The location is set to open in the spring and create between 30 and 35 jobs.
“Our ambition is to make IKEA more accessible to Canadians,” said Stefan Sjöstrand, President, IKEA Canada. “The Pick-Up and Order Points allow IKEA to expand quickly into high-demand markets, so that we can get to our customers faster.”
If these pick-up and order locations are successful, IKEA Canada is looking to expand in new and exisiting locations in the next ten years.
The Kitchener location will reduce delivery times and costs for customers while at the same time delivering design ideas and services. It will take up to two days for delivery to the Kitchener location.
Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic says it’s important for other local businesses as well. “As one of the world’s most innovative companies, we know they will feel right at home in our community. With IKEA’s focus on sustainability, having an IKEA store here means people will no longer need to leave Kitchener-Waterloo and drive long distances to experience one of the world’s favourite brands, and that’s good for our environment. That, coupled with bringing new jobs to our city will help ensure IKEA’s success in our market.”
