Province’s beer tax goes up

The provincial tax on beer has gone up 3 cents per litre, and this is just the first of four planned 3-cent hikes between 2015-2018.
Once the tax increases are fully implemented, the Wynne government’s goal is to raise 100 million dollars a year for the provincial treasury.
The first hike, which took effect yesterday, boosts the cost of a 24-pack by about 25 cents.
Bigger brewers have been ordered to swallow some of the tax increase until at least 2017.
The beer tax was announced in the government’s spring budget and the money raised will support priorities such as health care, education, infrastructure and transit.
