Waterloo firefighters to try 24-hour shift

Firefighters in Waterloo are moving to a 24-hour shift rotation starting in the new year for a two year trial period.

Currently, firefighters work 10-hour day shifts for four days on, followed by four days off. After that – four 14-hour night shifts.

Under the new 24-hour shift rotation, firefighters will work seven 24-hour days during a 28-day cycle.

82% of firefighters in the province work the 24-hour shift schedule including those in Cambridge, Guelph, Kitchener and London.
