Charges pending after collision in Kitchener shuts down intersection for several hours

Regional Police are investigating a serious crash in Kitchener that closed down a section of roadway for several hours yesterday.
The collision happened around 10:30 PM last night near the intersection of Highland Road and Ira Needles Boulevard.
Police say a 22-year-old male from Waterloo was driving a Toyota Corolla westbound on Highland Road West when he crossed the centre line and struck a Cadillac.
The Cadillac caught fire after the collision, but the 20-year-old male driver and his 19-year-old passenger were able to escape before fire engulfed the front interior of the car.
The fire was extinguished by the Kitchener Fire Department and the driver of the Toyota Corolla was arrested for impaired driving. He was taken to Grand River Hospital before being transferred to Hamilton General Hospital in stable condition.
The Kitchener male that was driving the Cadillac was treated for minor injuries before being released at Grand River Hospital.
Police had the area shut down for over six hours yesterday and the road did not re-open until about 4:30 this morning.
They say the investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
