Uber getting ready to roll in Waterloo Region

Uber says IT should be rolling in Waterloo Region “fairly soon.”

The general manager of Uber’s Canadian wing is Ian Black, and he has said there are enough drivers and users to make the ride sharing service a success.

Uber has said they are cheaper then traditional taxi service but Peter Neufeld, President of Waterloo Taxi says that is hard to believe.

“All I hear is about the surge pricing. If they’re busy, all of a sudden you’re paying 500% more. Within our industry, with Waterloo Taxi, you can expect to pay the same price on a Monday in the summer, or on New Years Eve. It’s exactly the same rate. We’re regulated, the fares are exactly the same, there are no surprises. There is no surge pricing within our industry.”

The company has met with officials at the region, but Black says they won’t be waiting for formal approval.

Uber says Waterloo Region is high on its list of desired new territory.
