Engineering reports cite structural deficiencies with Mayfair Hotel

The City of Kitchener has released two engineering reports commissioned by the owner of the Mayfair Hotel building, that outline “several structural deficiencies” with the building.
A report in The Record says the first report is a lengthy survey from last December conducted by Blackwell Structural Engineers.
The other is a smaller, four-page report on a study conducted last month, also by Blackwell, assessing damage from a water main break at the building last month.
Kitchener’s chief building official, Mike Seiling, said he relied on the reports, and on a separate engineering report he commissioned after the water main break, in deciding to condemn the Mayfair and order its demolition.
An inspection earlier this month, led to Seiling ordering the demolition of the adjoining Hymmen Building as well.
The city says the owner of the buildings, Bernie Nimer must apply for a demolition permit, no later than noon on Friday.
