A 10-point parking strategy for Uptown Waterloo was approved last night at Waterloo City Council.
Around 162 parking spots will be lost due to a number of reasons, including ION construction, road construction and development construction in the core but the city expects 149 new spaces to be created off of King.
Officials with the city say they recognize that there are businesses along King Street that don’t want to lose business.
“We are enabling a real significant transportation project, the LRT ION and it needs a place to go, unfortunately” says Tim Anderson, CAO for the City of Waterloo. “We’re going to have to give up a few spaces of on street parking, but we really gain on the upside.”
“Those parking spaces will be more focused along Caroline Street, on street parking. Erb Street, on street parking” says Anderson. “Some off street surface parking along Regina Street, for instance, at the old Canada Post facility.”
The plan will cost nearly $34,000 to complete.
