12:00 PM – Canadian Goodie Bags
Adam Vaughan, Liberal MP, Trinity-Spadina
It looks like corporate sponsors have jumped on board of Canadian citizenship ceremonies. There are four different types of ceremonies: standard, private, enhanced, and reaffirmation – and depending on which one you take part in, new Canadians could walk away with gifts ranging from Canadian flag pins, to books to Raptors, Leafs or Canuck tickets. Enhanced ceremonies typically include an external partner, a special guest or a designated speaker – and can be sponsored, which may lead to extra gifts for new Canadians. Adam Vaughan, the MP for Trinity-Spadina, says this is a significant event and could be trivialized by corporate sponsors. (ln 2014 alone, the government welcomed more than 262,000 new citizens. This is more new Canadians than in any year in Canada’s history.)
12:30 PM – PC Leadership
Christine Elliott, PC Leadership Candidate
A PC leadership candidate has spent the last 10 months campaigning across the province. She was in Kitchener about a week and a half ago for a breakfast and rally with PC party supporters, including local MPP Michael Harris and Regional Councillor Wayne Wettlaufer. Party members will vote by preferential ballot on May 7th – results will be announced this Saturday (May 9th) in Toronto. Patrick Brown is also in the running for the spot. Christine Elliott joins us now.
