10:00 AM – Central Strike Action
Greg Weiler, local president, Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario.
Ontario’s elementary school teachers will be taking “central strike action” in 32 public school boards next week. The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario says the action will begin Monday, but adds it won’t be providing details until it holds meetings to discuss its plans. Elementary teachers are in a legal position to launch a province wide strike on Sunday. ETFO members have been without a collective agreement since last August. The ETFO’s planned job action would come as high school teachers in the Toronto-area Peel region, the Sudbury region and the Durham region are on strike – action that’s affected more than 70,000 Ontario high school students.

10:30 AM – School strike tweet
Ty Stemmler, student, Waterloo-Oxford District Secondary School
An 18 year old is back at school after a an extra-long weekend. Ty Stemmler was suspended Wednesday through Friday of last week – for a tweet. The grade 12 student wrote a fake headline and put it on a screen that looked like the school board’s website, took a picture and posted it. It said that a strike at the Waterloo District School Board was official – and news spread fast. He was told to delete the tweet and sent home until Monday…Stemmler feels it was an overreaction and that detention would have been sufficient.
