11:00 – Green Bin use…or lack thereof

Those using the Region’s green bin program remains low – far under what officials had predicted when the program started. It was estimated in 2008 that 40-thousand tonnes would be collected in 2013…however, just under 9-thousand tonnes were binned last year. On Wednesday, Regional council agreed to purchase up to 12-thousand more green bins at a cost of 190-thousand dollars. Changes are expected to garbage collection by 2017…it’s estimated the Waterloo landfill has about 20 years of capacity left.
11:30 – Learning in a new way

Canada’s first recovery school has opened in Midland Ontario – it’s education done differently. There’s no dress code, and students get smoke breaks…rules are bent to accommodate them, as regular high school just didn’t work. The school focuses on rehabilitation and education – weaving an intense counselling program into the Ontario secondary school curriculum. This is for teenagers recovering from addiction to drugs and alcohol or suffering mental health issues. It opened in late February…and has only five enrolled students – however, the founder, Eileen Shewen says she’s been receiving applications from young people all over the country. She founded Quest after looking for alternatives for one of her own children.
