11:00 – Pet Store Update
Doug Craig, Mayor, City of Cambridge
Angela Cowan & Jenny Storey, members, Social Petwork
An interesting City Council meeting in Cambridge last night – as puppies, kittens and rabbits were on the agenda. Council struck down a plea from Social Petwork – a group calling for a by-law that would ban the sale of those animals in pet stores. Members said there was little proof that animals sold at Number One Pet Centre in the city. This has also been an issue in other municipalities, where bans or regulations have been put in place in Waterloo, Toronto, Vaughn and Mississauga. We’ll speak with members of Social Petwork – who say they’re looking to move forward and pleased with a recommendation that asks for full disclosure on where the animals are coming from. First though, Cambridge Mayor, Doug Craig, joins us to talk about last night’s meeting.
11:30 – Toyota
Greg Durocher, President & CEO, Cambridge Chamber of Commerce
An end of an era for the Toyota plant in Cambridge – but also…a new beginning…
The automaker has announced it will shift production of the Corolla to a new plant being built in Mexico. Production in Cambridge will then focus on larger vehicles. The company says it will invest heavily in the Cambridge plant – marking its first major reinvestment in the plant since it opened in 1997. Significant new investments are also expected over several years in the plants in Cambridge and Woodstock. It says it will maintain the facilities’ importance as a strategic manufacturing hub. The move will have no impact on staffing levels in the Ontario plants. The Cambridge plant began operations close to 30 years ago and has produced about 3.5 million Corolla models during that time. You can still see the very first one – a blue 1988 model – as it is in the lobby of the factory. The Mexican plant is expected to open in 2019.
