11:00 AM – Streamlining education

The group People for Education is calling for the streaming of students to be delayed at least until Grade 10. The group says a study suggests making students choose between academic and applied courses in grade 9 is putting many at a disadvantage. The survey of nearly 12-hundred schools finds 60 per cent of students who take applied mathematics in grade 9 take the majority of their courses in the applied stream — and only three per cent of principals report that students transfer often between applied and academic courses. The group also notes that a provincial study shows that only 21 per cent of students who took applied courses in grade 9 went on to college.

According to reports, the Principal of Jack Miner Public School in Toronto was under video surveillance for months on suspicion of misconduct. An e-mail, allegedly sent by the Ontario Principal’s Council to administrators says Courtney Carroll was suspected of using work time to write a book. Carroll has denied the allegations. A spokesperson for the Toronto District School Board says cameras have been used on rare occasions. Ryan Bird goes on to say that the TDSB is not using any hidden cameras in its schools, and they’re reviewing their policy. While there could be around ten cameras in use across the district, lawyers say it could be illegal – IF employees are not informed they are being used.
