Finance Minister Joe Oliver says the balanced budget legislation the government plans to introduce will ensure that the programs Canadians depend on will be there for them. He says that is what balanced budget legislation is all about. The legislation would cut the pay of cabinet ministers and their deputy ministers by five per cent during a deficit situation and implement an automatic freeze on operating spending.

This year marks the 98th anniversary of the First World War’s Battle of Vimy Ridge, which took place April 9-12, 1917. The sacrifices of Canadian troops are remembered and honoured on Vimy Ridge Day, celebrated annually on April 9. Mark Humphries joins us now to talk about what yesterday’s celebration included, as well as why it’s important to remember.
