Regional Police involved in fatal shooting incident

Police say they were involved in a shooting of a 20-year-old man.

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit is now handling the investigation.

They say officers with the Waterloo Regional Police Service responded to call at 77 Brybeck Crescent in Kitchener, last night around 9:15pm.

There was an interaction between police and the man, and he was shot; the man was pronounced dead in hospital.

Local neighbours tell us the man was holding a knife during the incident.

“There was a guy standing on the opposite building, and he has, I think, a knife in his hand” says the neighbour. “One girl and one boy was standing on the other side and then two police and a car came. Because he didn’t properly drop the knife and that, he was not obeying them and then they shoot him. I think it was 6 or 7 times. It was more than 4 or 5.”

“He was standing 15-20 feet from the officer, he was not a threat.”

He was very upset with last nights events.

“I couldn’t sleep last night” adds the neighbour. “The whole image in my head. My daughter she started crying. What do I do?”

The SIU assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to probe the circumstances of this incident.

Brybeck is now open but the investigation will continue.
