The future of Centre in the Square in Kitchener will involve more community development. Kitchener councillors discussed the future of the performance centre and agreed on the facility hosting a wide range of non-profit activities and maximizing its LOCAL arts and culture involvement. Last year the city asked staff to review the centre’s mandate after it posted a $1.5 Million dollar deficit.
Parking troubles
In January, we spoke with Kitchener City Councillor Bil Ioannidis. Like many areas, Ward 7 is dealing with parking and traffic concerns in local school zones. He put forth a motion that city staff work with the region, both school boards and police to come up with a solution. The problem is that schools don’t like parents parking in the lots for safety reasons – some don’t even use their ‘kiss and drop off zones.’ This forces parents to park their cars on both sides of residential streets, some even blocking driveways, while they walk their children to school. This can result in tickets from by-law, heated confrontations – even the Police being called. Last night, the report came as an ‘information item’ and was discussed briefly at committee – stating that staff will be working with the ‘Active and Safe Routes to School Committee.’ Most of the stakeholders have representation…they will be conducting a survey shortly, plus a workshop in June. A report with recommendations will be brought to council in September.
