Consolidation and closures for Future Shop Canada

Effective immediately, Future Shop stores in Canada will be consolidating under the Best Buy brand.

66 Future Shops will close for good, while 65 others will become Best Buy Stores.

The converted stores will reopen after a one-week closure. The move will mean there will be a total of 192 Best Buys in Canada. It means 500 full-time jobs and 1,000 part-times jobs will lost.

Tthe Future Shop in Waterloo on King Street near Northfield Drive will become a Best Buy. The one in Kitchener at the Sunrise Centre has been closed immediately. No word on the Future Shop in Cambridge, but it is a few doors down from a Best Buy.

“Currently, 80 per cent of our customers are within a 15 minute drive to a store and this won’t change,” said Ron Wilson, President and COO of Best Buy Canada. “We will continue to have a strong store presence in all major markets in Canada.”

“Any decisions that impact our people are never taken lightly; our first priority is to support them through this change,” Wilson said. “I want to express my appreciation to the employees who are leaving, for their contributions to Best Buy Canada.”
