10:00 – Plane Crash – Intentional
Hans Juergensen, Pilot, Air Transat (since 1999)
A French prosecutor says the co-pilot of the Germanwings airliner that crashed on Tuesday “intentionally” sent the plane into its doomed descent. He says the co-pilot appeared to want to “destroy the plane.” He confirms that black box recordings reveal the pilot was locked out of the cockpit, and was pounding on the door but the co-pilot refused to open it. All 150 people on board were killed when the plane crashed in the French Alps. German authorities are taking charge of the investigation of the co-pilot, who has been identified as Andreas Lubitz.
10:30 – St. Pat’s – opinion piece
Luisa D’Amato, opinion columnist, The Record
It was around this time last week that we did our St. Patrick’s day wrap up – as we heard, it was another busy day for Police and officials as they kept a close eye on thousands of University students who spilled onto Ezra in Waterloo. We know this is the most extensive operation for the Waterloo Regional Police Service – and there is even talk about enhancing next years’ festivities, including food stalls where money raised could be donated to charity. In her recent opinion piece, Record writer, Luisa D’Amato says “It’s too big to handle. It isn’t safe, healthy or desirable. And our officials shouldn’t be enabling it. They should be suppressing it.”
