10:00 – Minimum Wage

Ontario’s minimum wage will be the second-highest rate in the country after the Northwest Territories when it increases to 11 dollars and 25 cents an hour on October 1st. Last fall, the minimum wage was tied to inflation, so every year the new rate will be announced by April 1st to take effect that October. The general minimum wage will increase from the current 11 dollars, while the minimum wage for students rises to 10-55 an hour and nine-80 an hour for liquor servers. The Northwest Territories’ minimum wage will be increased to 12-50 in June.

A case out of Quebec could change privacy laws for all Canadians crossing the border. If it goes to trial, you could have your phone searched legally by the Canada Border Services Agency. A man in Quebec was charged with obstruction after refusing to give his blackberry password to CBSA staff. They say he was hindering them from performing their role. SFU Professor Richard Smith is warning the case could set a precedent for privacy laws – he joins us live now.
