10:30 – Highway 7 expansion
In Studio: Mark Bingeman, Owner, Bingemans
We’ve been talking a lot about LRT construction – today we’re going to shift the focus on Highway 7. In about two months’ time, construction will start on the expansion between Kitchener and Guelph. Work on the major project is expected to take about five construction seasons to complete. The first spot to get tackled is Guelph Street under the Conestoga Parkway, which will be closed until October. Starting in the fall, crews will then begin work on widening Victoria Street in Kitchener, and then build the Shirley Avenue extension. All the land necessary to complete the project has been acquired, but some people and businesses have asked for a later possession date. An exact cost for the total project has not yet been released. Mark Bingeman joins us now – he’s been working closely with the MTO and has an interactive map, showing all the phases, on Bingemans website. He says this is going to change how people enter and exit the Region – and warns of traffic woes ahead when the Victoria Street Bridge is taken down. The Liberals initially announced plans for the expansion in 2007, shelved the project in 2010 – then included it in the 2014 budget.
