11:00 AM – Seniors – discounts

In interesting opinion piece in the local paper titled: “It’s time seniors paid full fare for buses, and everything else.” The 50 year old author of the piece sites Shoppers Drug Mart’s Seniors Day, cheap movie tickets, cheap bus fare, cheap museum admission, free fishing licences as just some of the breaks awaiting him – and all of us – at the age of 65. Peter Shawn Taylor says “it’s time to retire the senior discount – and that research shows that discounting government services for the elderly is unfair, inefficient and dangerous to local finances.” He says we now have more seniors – who are more financially secure than ever before…Taylor joins us now to share his opinion on the local situation.
11:30 AM – Laurier Cuts

Last week we heard of student protests following staff and management employee cuts at Wilfrid Laurier University. 22 layoffs have already been announced – they were given 24 hours to remove their belongings. Now, the Wilfrid Laurier University Faculty Association says there are plans to eliminate 30 faculty positions in the near future, which includes the elimination of 18 full-time positions. The President of the Faculty Association, Rob Kristofferson, says the financial situation is not as dire as we’re hearing – with the number of Managers increasing by 114 percent in the last decade. He says, in the same period, fulltime teaching and librarian positions have grown by a mere 24 percent, well behind the 36 percent growth in student enrolment.
