10:00 AM – Potholes

Could this bitter cold and never-ending winter have been good for something?! This week’s thaw is unveiling what we all know is there – potholes. However, as we heard from the City of Waterloo yesterday on 570 News – there will hopefully be less than in years’ past…due to the freeze and thaw cycles. While we haven’t seen much of the thaw part, crews have been out, tending to the roads on a daily basis as part of their regular duties.
10:30 AM – Circus Elephants

It was a move welcomed by many – as last week we heard that the “Greatest Show on Earth” will go on without elephants.
The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus says they will phase out the use of the animals by 2018. Animal rights groups have taken credit for the decision, although officials say many cities have passed ‘anti-circus’ and ‘anti-elephant’ ordinances, which makes it difficult to organize three travelling circuses. Locally, African Lions Safari, located outside of Hamilton, has the biggest elephant breeding program in Canada as part of the Species Survival Plan, according to zoocheck. The site goes on to say “the plan is NOT to return animals to the wild so they have little real conservation value, if any, to wild elephant populations and that their circus style elephant show provides little, if any, positive education and in fact may result in negative education about normal elephant behavior.” Susan Nance studies the history of the entertainment industry and animal management in the American circus. She is the author of Entertaining Elephants: Animal Agency and the Business of the American Circus, which examines elephant behaviour and how both circus people and elephants struggled behind the scenes to meet the profit necessities of the entertainment business.
