Regional crime rate continues to slide

The region’s crime rate fell almost six per cent in 2013.

There were almost 26-thousand incidents.

It’s at a time where the national rate has dropped to its lowest point since 1969.

Jillian Boyes with Statistics Canada says numbers are even better here in the Region.

“Between 2012 and 2013, we see Waterloo was below the National average, but it was slightly higher than the provincial average.”

Boyes says one contributing factors is age.

“Typically it’s younger people that are committing crimes, that’s what we see in our statistics, so as the population gets older, that may play a factor in it,” says Boyes.

However, Waterloo Region had eight homicides in 2013, doubling the 2012 total.
