A discussion over freedom of speech, sparked by the massacre at the offices of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical magazine in Paris, continues to dominate many headlines. Recently, tens of thousands of Muslims attended a state-sponsored rally in Chechnya to protest Charlie Hebdo cartoons of Prophet Muhammad. Imam Kabbar of the Islamic Centre of Cambridge will chat about the Muslim faith, the Charlie cartoon and the radicalization of Westerners. He will also be taking phone calls.

The life-threatening wounding of one Alberta R-C-M-P officer, and the less serious wounding of the constable partner is raising questions if more can be done to protect officers who don’t carry firearms. Derek Bond, and R-C-M-P Constable David Wynn were shot while conducting a routine investigation at a casino on Saturday near Edmonton. Police announced yesterday Wynn is not expected to survive after he was shot in the head at close range. As an auxiliary officer, Bond didn’t carry a gun. The Mounted Police Professional Association of Canada says auxiliary officers are civilians who volunteer part-time, and don’t have the same level of training as regular officers. Last week, a report was issued with 64 recommendations (following review of the Justin Bourque killing, which killed three Mounties and wounded two others) – calling for better training and better access to weapons and body armour – as well as improvements in radio communication.
