Toronto has Nathan Phillips Square and soon the public square in front of Kitchener’s City Hall will have a new name too. It will be known as Carl Zehr Square in honour of the city’s longest serving mayor.
It was announced at a farewell celebration for the mayor Wednesday night and Zehr himself was moved.
“I’m overwhelmed by this evening and the great wishes that people have given to me and to have the Civic Square named after me is just something that was very unexpected and I’m just so honoured.”

Kitchener’s Chief Administrative Officer Jeff Witmer says the city feels this tribute is fitting given the mayor’s support and involvement in the revitalization of the downtown.
The new name goes into effect December 1st once new council takes office.
