11:00- Making Carbon Monoxide Alarms Mandatory

Ontario is taking another step to keep families and homes in Ontario safe by making carbon monoxide alarms mandatory in all residential homes. The new regulation, which comes into effect today, updates Ontario’s Fire Code following the passage of Bill 77 last year. Carbon monoxide detectors will now be required near all sleeping areas in residential homes and in the service rooms, and adjacent sleeping areas in multi-residential units. Carbon monoxide alarms can be hardwired, battery-operated or plugged into the wall.
The Hawkins-Gignac Foundation for CO Education was established to ensure the Hawkins family – Laurie, Richard, Cassandra and Jordan – did not perish in vain. As a registered charity, it is bound by the requirements and laws of all registered charities in Canada under the Canadian Revenue Agency. John Gignac, Laurie’s uncle, acts as spokesperson about the family’s terrible loss and is the face of the Foundation created in their honour. The Foundation has two primary purposes: To educate people on the dangers of carbon monoxide gas: its sources its symptoms its statistics its prevention and detection 2. To raise funds to purchase carbon monoxide alarms: alarms will be bought at special rates from Canada’s #1 CO alarm company fire departments can apply to the Foundation to receive donated alarms alarm grants will be tracked and distribution verified in each community.
11:30- James Rhodes Drops Out of Kitchener Mayors Race
Kitchener mayoral candidate James Rhodes has backed out of the race. In a release sent to 570 News, Rhodes says he will instead support rival Dan Glenn-Graham who he says share many views about municipal politics. The municipal election will be held on October 27. The full release: “I started my campaign with a vision on how I could make the City of Kitchener a better place. That better place started with fiscal responsibility and transparency. After much thought and consideration, I have decided to withdraw my candidacy for the position of Mayor of Kitchener and instead support Dan Glenn-Graham in his bid to be elected Mayor. Following our debates and the many conversations I have had with Dan at events, I have come to realize he supports my core values of fiscal responsibility and transparency, and I am assured of his commitments to these values going forward. Further, he fully supports my commitment to provide more services to the mentally and physically disadvantaged in our City. I am deeply honoured and humbled by the support that the residents of Kitchener have shown me since my first debate. I hope that you trust my vision further, and give your support to Dan Glenn-Graham with the same enthusiasm you have shown me.”
