Local candidates using robocalls to get message out

The municipal election is less than 2 weeks away – and some candidates are using robocalls to get their message out.Regional Councilors Jane Mitchell and Sean Strickland are seeking re-election – and are both using the technology to reach constituents.

Kitchener Mayoral hopeful Berry Vrbanovic and Regional Chair candidate Jay Aissa are also using it.

Candidates say the region’s growth has made it more challenging to reach voters.

Bob Williams is a Political Science Professor Emeritus at the University of Waterloo and spoke with 570 News about robocalls.

“They can be much more intrusive if they come at a bad time or they’re just not something people want to deal with. Lawn signs and signs along the roadway, at least you don’t have to look. The downside of that is that you tend to tune out.”

Williams says he can’t recall it happening in Waterloo Region before – and likely something that is here to stay as technology progresses.

Meantime, the City of Guelph is allowing residents to vote online. So far, over 3700 votes have been cast.

The municipal election is October 27th.
