11:00- Food Waste

Food waste in Canada totals $27 billion, 51% is home waste. Recently, I’ve been focusing on reducing food waste generated by our household: we try to buy less food and in more manageable amounts that don’t end up green binned.
I wrote recently in this column that proper food management at home and in restaurants is important for our rapidly growing planet. It’s a systemic issue at home, in the commercial processing of food and in the hospitality sector. My earlier column stated that food waste is difficult to avoid and cited a 2010 report by the George Morris Centre, an agri-food research organization. The report stated the amount of waste in the agri-food sector is higher than in other industries and slotted “waste creators” into seven categories. The most relevant for us is “Unnecessary Inventory.” Just think of junk mail that advertises savings on large amounts of food that people might end up just throwing away. In Canada, that waste totals $27 billion and is more than the combined GDPs of 32 of the world’s poorest countries. Of that, 51 per cent is home waste.

Animal hospitals in Texas, Florida and Oregon won Veterinary Practice News’ ninth annual radiograph contest, “They Ate WHAT?” Pet insurer Trupanion , sponsored the contest and will provide cash awards to support the uncompensated care these hospitals provide pets. The first-place winner was Paws & Claws Animal Hospital of Plano, Texas.
