Amid a series of sexual allegations against local taxi drivers, cameras will be installed in many cabs that serve the area.
According to Peter Neufeld, President of the Waterloo Region Taxi Association and Waterloo Taxi it’s for the safety of passengers and drivers.
He says he has been in the business for 25 years and has never seen this many allegations before
“We’re going to make this a mandatory issue with us, the other companies I’m sure will follow suit…we need to do this to protect everyone involved and ensure the safety of the passenger is still there.”
Neufeld says some individual cars have already installed the cameras for their personal safety, but the Association wants to make them mandatory for all taxis.
He says it will cost about 100 thousand dollars to outfit the 92 cabs in the Waterloo Taxi fleet.
