1:30- TOPIC – Blue Jays to honour Yankees captain on final visit to Toronto
Guest- John Manuel, Editor in Chief of Baseball America
The Derek Jeter farewell tour hits Toronto for his final visit this weekend, and the Blue Jays are set to honour the surefire hall of famer. The ceremony will take place before Sunday’s series finale, but details about the gift remain under wraps. Last season they gave retiring Yankees closer Mariano Rivera a “distinctly Canadian” gift: an Inuit sculpture depicting a man in a canoe reeling in a giant fish. They also donated $10,000 to Rivera’s charitable foundation. Whatever the team does, it will no doubt rank highly among Jeter’s fondest memories of T.O. Few of his career highlights have happened on the Jays’ turf, though one of the lowlights did. On opening day of the 2003 season, Jeter dislocated his left shoulder while sliding head-first into third base. Blue Jays catcher Ken Huckaby, running over to cover, went in legs first while attempting to block the bag. After the game, the Yankees slammed what they called a dirty play. Dirty or not, the play left Jeter with the first significant injury of his career. He ended up missing six weeks and didn’t return to the Yankees lineup until May 13. On the positive side, Jeter reached a couple of significant milestones in Toronto, including one this season. On April 6, he hit an opposite-field single for his 3,320nd career hit and passed ex-Jay Paul Molitor for ninth spot on the MLB list. He’s up to sixth now with 3,443. On July 12, 2008, Jeter belted the 200th home run of his career at the Rogers Centre.
